The Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture (ISACC), together with the UP College of Music, is mounting National Artist Lucio San Pedro's zarzuela BAYAN, Isang Paa Na Lamang in performances at UP Diliman and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Director is Paul Morales, musical director, arranger and conductor is Prof. Chino Toledo while vocal coach and chorus master is Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama.

The zarzuela, with a libretto by ISACC President and CEO Melba Padilla Maggay, won in the 1998 National Centennial Literary Competition. San Pedro completed the music just before he died in March this year.

BAYAN, Isang Paa Na Lamang is "history from below," an attempt to depict the historic events from 1896 to 1897 from the perspective of those anonymous men and women who formed the ranks of the Katipunan. The conflict centers on the clash of cultures represented by these movements, of which the Katipunan is part, and those shaped by external influences such as libertarian idea, coming from Europe at the time.

Included in the cast are Mr. Robert Seņa, Ms. Deeda Barretto, Ms Cynthia Culig-Guico, Ms. Aileen Espinosa-Cura, Mr. Bimbo Cerrudo, Mr. Lawrence Jatayna, Mr. Lionel Guico, Mr. Gamaliel Viray, Ms. Janet Sabas-Aracama and the UP Concert Chorus.

Performance dates will be on July 25, 26 ( 7:30 PM ), 27 ( 3 PM and 7:30 PM ), 2002 at the University Theatre in UP Diliman and on August 3 ( 3PM and 8PM ), 2002 at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
